The seven deadly sins: pride, envy, wrath, gluttony, lust, sloth, and greed. If you are Christian, or have Christian friends, you might have heard of the seven sins. According to the Bible, they are very severe sins and one should always avoid them and control these negative emotions. But should you feel guilty when you feel angry, lusty, lazy, etc. ? Should you consider yourself a sinner for feeling these emotions? Emotions are simply your conscious reactions to the external events happening in your life, if you’re feeling negative emotions it only means that there some things that are are happening around you or to you or your loved ones that you don’t like (envy, wrath, and sloth), you like too much (gluttony, lust and greed) and you consider yourself above all else (pride).

That is all these negative emotions are, they are the conscious (or unconscious) reactions you have towards the events in your life. If you feel these emotions, most likely you’ll know consciously what events are causing them, if you don’t know you can keep your mind quiet and after a while the reason pops up in your brain, and if you still can’t find the reason and these negative emotions are becoming chronic and harming your health and relationships, then it’s time to go to the doctor. Regardless, if you solve the events that are causing these emotions or reconcile with the events, then your negative emotions go away, if you repress them without addressing them, they will just sink into your subconscious and one fine Monday you explode and yell (or cry) at your spouse, your boss, your best friend, and so on, or you go into brief depression, or you may feel burnout suddenly, not knowing the reason why.

Thus, you could look at emotions as signals of your (both conscious and unconscious) reactions to the events in your life and if everything is fine then your emotions are either neutral or positive and if not then your emotions are negative. Sounds simple but it is not at all simple to be aware of your emotional state, it is even harder to solve the negative emotions while stopping yourself from doing impulsive actions that will harm you in the long run (especially to those who do self-harm and those who binge eat), it takes practice in the right direction like meditation or contemplation, and the more you practice the better you get.
